Liberal Democrats rally to save Beverley Post Office

Local Liberal Democrats rallied support on Saturday 20th October to prevent the closure of Beverley's central Post Office. Hundreds of local residents signed a petition against the closure. It was found that there is clear support for retaining the Post Office in its current location.

It is also clear that the closure of the Post Office will not benefit its staff. Many will have to transfer over to much less favourable terms and conditions of employment, after many years of dedicated service.

Many local citizens expressed the view that the W H Smith premises, into which the Post Office is to be transferred, is unsuitable for this purpose. The current Post Office is heavily used, and people questioned if the W H Smith site would have capacity to give a good service, given its primary purpose as a popular retail outlet.

Overall voters of all persuasions from across the spectrum expressed a strong feeling that the proposed closure of the Beverley central Post Office was driven entirely by commercial cost reduction priorities. They felt the decision would degrade the local Post Office services.
