We are a group of local Liberal Democrats who try to make a difference in the East Riding of Yorkshire - specifically the Beverley and Holderness area.

The Liberal Democrats are a different kind of political party. Much more than the other major parliamentary parties, we are a democratic organisation, where our members decide our policy and elect our leader without undue influence from corporations or trades unions.

Our local parties are independent and work hard in their communities - giving local people a voice and deciding how their neighbourhoods are run. And we have strong national parties in Scotland and Wales, and regional party organisations in England.

In the 2010-2015 Coalition Government, Liberal Democrats delivered a tax cut of more than £800 for millions of low and middle-income taxpayers, created 2 million jobs and helped 2 million apprentices.

During and after the 2016 Brexit Referendum we argued the case for European Union membership or at least a referendum on the final deal negotiated by the government. Theresa May then called an election in 2017, lost her majority, and put to parliament an EU deal which even many of her own MPs could not and did not support.

Many people thought things could not get any worse....

Jacob Rees-Mogg shows his respect for parliament

But they did. Boris correctly realised that the parliament he had inherited from Theresa May could not effectively make policy. So he called a General Election and wisely or otherwise the other parliamentary parties sanctioned it. In the December 2019 General Election, the Tories won a majority of 80, settling Britain's political future for at least the next 5 years.

Boris gets serious

During and after May's shambolic two years as Prime Minister many of the things that people in East Yorkshire care about were neglected. Local health care services, local social care services, local schools and transport services. While the main parties battled it out on whether to Brexit, or how to Brexit, we Liberal Democrats campaigned locally for a better lot for East Yorkshire. With the Tories now firmly in power, our local budgets are already at risk, not least because the Tories take votes for granted in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Local Liberal Democrats express their concern about the recent Beverley Hospital closure scares.

In Beverley and Holderness key issues for Liberal Democrat campaigning are:

  • Local care services under severe budgetary strain
  • Local health services in the face of threatened cuts and closures
  • Preservation of our pleasant environment especially in the face of fracking
  • Local education budgets which have been insufficient for years
  • The poor condition of local roads
  • Local housing policy which seems to be obsessed with building very expensive homes over the affordable homes needed

We are always delighted to welcome new members and can be contacted via our contact form on this website, or by contacting one of our local parish or county councillors. You can also find out more by visiting the main Liberal Democrat website at www.libdems.org.

We meet regularly, usually in the Potting Shed pub in Beverley at 7 pm on the second Tuesday of each month, where we discuss local party matters and events, and the national political situation.
